Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, love until the end, their last encounter in London June 1982
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, love until the end
After their second divorce, two other marriages for him, one for her, but Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton loved each other until the end - Richard Burton's death.
Elizabeth Taylor confessed it clearly in books and interviews. As for Richard Burton, there are so many signs that "ET", as he called her in his diaries, stayed in his heart until the last day.
(I shall write an article about Richard Burton's several declarations made to his brothers or John Hurt which prove his vivid love for her until August 4 1984.)

The last encounter between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, in London, at Finnegan's Pub, June 1982
When Elizabeth Taylor left the Betty Ford Center on January 22nd, 1984, after a stay of a few weeks in December 1983 / January 1983, Richard Burton saw a picture of her in a magazine, beautiful and cured of her pills and alcohol addictions.
They resumed hours of talk through the phone - no doubt at the despair of his wife of that time, Sally Haye.
Each time, he was asking to see her again, in London or Gstaad.
The last encounter did happen "six weeks before his death", according to Elizabeth Taylor's later interview.
What did the couple, who had embodied the most famous love affair of the 20th century, say, while seated at that restaurant? Not too many "sensitive" dialogues since they were surrounded by Richard Burton's wife and Elizabeth Taylor's fiancee. It was said that they kissed of course as "former spouses". Well, anyway, they did not need to exchange "sensitive" words because they used to talk for hours on the phone at that time.
There might be a sign though - or a simple coincidence? (I doubt it...) For their last encounter, Elizabeth Taylor wears a red scarf around her neck. The one she has on one of the pictures underneath. Did she do it on purpose to please the Welsh, addicted to the red of his beloved Wales? If so, it was a touching.... and discreet sign.
The red and white scarf: Elizabeth Taylor wears it when she leaves for China in May 1 1984 (picture below). It is the same that she has around her neck when she meets Richard Burton, in June 1984 (picture of Star tabloïd). Alamy made a mistake in referencing their picture on February 1985)

How did Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton feel to see each other again?
In an interview made with the magazine "People" published on March 15, 1982, Richard Burton had reacted after having been invited to Elizabeth Taylor's 50th birthday at the nightclub Legends, on the 27th of February 1982. At that time, they had not seen each other for five years. It matched their second divorce, his remarriage with Susan Hunt, and their last encounter in Gstaad, probably in December 1976 or January 1977, when Elizabeth introduced her new husband John Warner to him.
He said: "Seeing her again was like having my stomach ripped out."
He had written almost the same expression in his diaries just before they met with their lawyers in Gstaad in August 1975.
It does not need much imagination to figure that Richard Burton did feel this way and had "his stomach ripped out" when he saw her again that day in early June 1984. Moreover, she looked gorgeous!
How did Elizabeth Taylor feel? She said later that, if Richard Burton had asked her to remarry at that time, she would have accepted with a slap of the finger...

Elizabeth Taylor's graceful figure, when Richard Burton saw her for the last time in London, in June 1984
The image printed in the tabloïd is not good and does not show a good profile of Elizabeth.
Therefore, it is interesting to compare with the pictures of late May on their return to London.
She looked lovely and healthy.
Richard Burton must have been"shaken" by her look! ;-)
Like many of these "stock" pictures, the dates have to be believed carefully. These pictures were definitely made in May 1984 or early June, after the return of Elizabeth Taylor and Victor Luna from China and India. Some were dated May 1, some at the end of May 22, and others with no details., I try to guess as accurately as possible by comparing the color of her hair: she was blond during her China trip.
London, Chelsea, after the return of Elizabeth Taylor and Victor Luna from China and India in May 22, 1984..
Gorgeous Elizabeth Taylor.... a few days before she meets Richard Burton again! If the date were correct, May 14, 1984, it would have been in China. But, viewing the porter on the background of the last picture, it is more likely to be taken the end of May, early June.
Note the red scarf around her neck. Isn't it the same than of the picture of their last encounter????

One topic exchanged with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton on that day
Thousands of people would have loved to be a "little mouse" for listening to the two former lovers during that public meeting.
What did they say to each other? What did not say with words, but with their eyes?
On an interview made in 1988 by Phil Donahue, Elizabeth Taylor only talked about one topic of discussion during that lunch:
"The last time I saw him which was two months before his death, he was so proud of what I have done. And he was very interested, very inquisitive about what was is going on in Betty Ford Center, how I have done it, what the process, the procedures were.
I think he would have eventually gone there."

The last picture of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton
The last picture of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton together was taken in early June 1984 - before the 14th of June, for sure, because at that time Elizabeth Taylor was in Hollywood for the Breeder's Cup.
The newspaper did not precise the day of their meeting, noting it was shot approximately six weeks before his death. This matches what Elizabeth said.
It was printed by the English magazine, Star, dated 1984 August 21, issued after Richard Burton's death.
I have searched and searched for another picture, but the "Star" printed that it was the single one existing.
.
Therefore, hereunder is the exclusive photo of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor together, during lunch-time, in London, with his fifth wife, Elizabeth's fiancee Victor Luna, and at least two other persons, a man and a blond woman. There might have been a third one (hidden at the right bottom corner of the clip).

Some personal and subjective comments on the last picture of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton together
Richard Burton has a short haircut for his role of O'Brien in "Nineteen Eighty-Four" movie, directed by Michael Radford, and based upon George Orwell's 1949 novel, which was also starring John Hurt.
The crew was actually shooting in London at that time.
It is a business meeting: the man, seated in front of Elizabeth Taylor, is talking specifically to her. He has in hand a pencil to write down details. (figures ?) The subject must be important and stressful if we analyze the serious gazes of that man, Richard and Elizabeth.
He might be a producer of cinema or theater, or a member of the crew of "Nineteen Eighty-Four"; or a future business partnership of Elizabeth Taylor. (That would explain the paper with figures for setting a budget for setting the overall cost of a project).
The behavior of Victor Luna is difficult to analyze: he does not look at the man talking. He is either listening to him with looking at him - doubtful, because it would not be polite. Or he is listening to the person sitting in front of him (and hidden in that picture. Or... he is just bored.... or worried!
The funniest detail of this historical picture can be seen at the left of the image:
everyone's attention is turned toward the businessman, except one single person: Sally Haye (Burton)! She is turned in the direction of Elizabeth Taylor. Her eyes tell a lot! She looks hypnotized by the greatest love of her actual husband. Or would she be "frightened" by her presence and the effect the latter might - must - do on Richard Burton?
If jealousy could be written on the forehead...

The love words of Richard Burton, written by Rhett Butler!
Chap .52 of my Gone with the Wind fanction, The Boutique Robillard: Love letter,
My own crossover of the two greatest stories: a fictional one, between Rhett Butler and Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind, and two real - so real - lovers Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. It only happens in one single chapter N°52 of my historical novel The Boutique Robillard: Rhett Butler writes a love letter to Scarlett O'Hara, using Richard Burton's words written in his diaries for Elizabeth Taylor.
